I studied Ayurvedic Medicine right after I graduated from Boston University Dental School. Sometimes People ask me "Do you miss Dentistry?" After studying holistic medicine, I learned about the effects of Mercury in the amalagams that Dentist use to fill cavities: Autism? Alzeimer's disease? Over 4,000 scientific reports indicating the effects of Mercury in children from pediatric immunizations. If you do the research you will come to understand that some superfoods, such as Spirulina & Chlorella, can be used to reverse these disease. Ginko Biloba is another herb used for treating degenerative neural conditions. The ancient Mayans and Aztecs, as well as Indians, knew of these health benefits.
In the 70's, there was a lot of interest concerning Chinese, and Indian, Medicine. Dr.David Eisenberg, went to China personally to study their form of medicine. He later returned to Harvard and was influential in the 70's in beginning Complementary Medicine. Later, of course, many practitioners came and made these Chinese practices more popular. For example, Acupuncture, which is now considered mainstream. Of course, Dr.Herbert Benson is well known for the Mind-Body Institute. Later, of course, Dr. Deepak Chopra would become the most famous exponent of Ayurvedic Medicine. He was first associated with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and now with Buddhism. Ayurveda focuses on a preventative lifestyle, incorporating meditation and a vegetarian diet. I studied the I Ching for a while and then joined the Hare Krsna ashram and moved to North Miami. While there,I took a course from the Ayurvedic Institute where Dr. Vasant Lad and Dr. Robert Svoboda teach. However, I branched off into Astrology which is also considered one of the Vedic Arts. David Frawley also directs the American Institue of Vedic Studies which also has a branch of Ayurvedic Studies. I studied on my own, reading the classic compilation Ancient Hindu Astrology for the Modern Western Astrologer by James Braha. Astrology is
useful in diagnosing genetic medical predispositions. Of course, I found B.V. Raman who was the leading astrologer in India. One of the herbs used in treatment is Tulasi, or Holy Basil, which is considered sacred as well as having proven medicinal qualities. Tulsi is worshiped every morning in Sri Caitanya Saraswat Math, as well as every ISKCON temple in the world. It is now combined with Turmeric root (improves circulation, digestion, and reduces inflammation), Tulsi leaf (improves digestion and intestinal health) Schizandra fruit (enhances mental function & memory) Jujube fruit (calms the nerves & serves as a mild rejuvenative) Haritaki fruit (serves as a mild detoxifying agent& nourishes the tissues),Ginger root (improves digestion, absorption and assimilation) combined with Amalaki, Indian gooseberry, which is a rejuvenant. By the way, the prasadam eaten at the Hare Krsna centers is full of tumeric and garnished with tulasi. I know, I used to cook there. In addition to dietary remedies, gems are also used because of their vibrational energy. I am a member of the Planetary Gemologist Association. Gems must be chosen carefully, both for their purity and faultlessness,
and also for the relevance to the client's karma. This requires a competent astrologer to diagnose which planets are acting beneficially and which planets are acting malefically. The astrologer also must pay attention to which particular period, "dasa" the client is currently in as well. Vaishnava devotees also wear tulasi beads for Divine protection.

Traditional Ayurvedic masters spend many years in the jungle learning which plants can be used medicinally. I believe that Dr. Chopra discovered it in another way. He comes from a family of doctors and his grandfather was an Ayurvedic practitioner. He, himself, was familiar with the Bhagavad-Gita. Working in Boston, he became dismayed with Western Medicine and joined forces with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (TM) in 1985,but later split with him when Mahrishi tried to curb his style. His first book is "Creating Health"and he later wrote "Ageless Body, Timeless Mind" which became a run-away best-seller. He has now written over 40 books most dealing with the premise that consciousness is the basic foundation of nature and the Universe.
Of course, the seed had already been planted in the West by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada and Srila Bhakti Raksak Sridhar Maharaj. They were godbrothers and disciples of Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswat Maharaj, who gave them the thankless task of bringing the teachings of the Bhagavad-Gita to the West. Of course, Prabupada himself came to the West penniless. However, he soon had disciples and temples all over the World. After Prabhupada's passing, his disciples sought the shelter of B.R. Sridhar Maharaj of Nabadwip and, later, B.S. Govinda Maharaj, who is now on his 23rd World Tour. In Indian culture, it is considered "against Vedic principles" to leave India. However, our sampradaya has been given the challenge of preaching the Holy Name "in every town and village," so that is a higher principle.
