Moisturizers: A Problem? Or just for Mice?

Posted on August 15th, 2008 in research by admin0

moisturizer-skin-cream.jpg

According to Anna Boyd of eFlux Media, the recent scare about moisurizers may be a little exaggerated. You see, many people use moisturizers as if they were UV protection agents, or sunscreens.
They are not.
However, De. Allan Conney of Rutgers did find in his research that Dermabase, Dermavan, Eucerin and Vanicream – caused tumors to grow on the mice, according to Fox News. However, as other dermatologists noted, studies in mice don’t always produce valid results in humans.

Anti-Oxidant Juice Scam

Posted on June 27th, 2008 in nutrition by admin0

chocolate.jpg

In one of my email subscriptions, a Raw foods expert, Frederic Patenaude debunked the whole anti-oxidant juice scams. These are usually the MLM juice products, like, Noni, Xango, Mangosteen, and Goji Berry that are on the market nowadays. They sell for anywhere from $35 to $50/bottle and, in order to qualify as a distributor and make any commissions, you will have to sign up for what is called an “auto-ship” every month. this might run you $100 or more a month.
Frederic suggests that most likely you can simply buy the Mangosteen fruit inexpensively at an Asian market. also you might want to eat other types of fruit, like berries, pomegranate juice, prunes and leafy green vegetables.
Another suggestion is cacao powder (unsweetened chocolate) which is one of the best anti-oxidants out there. For these products you can go here Sunfood Nutrition.
I have a number of smoothie recipes on my website VeggieBliss

Feng Shui and Vaastu Shastra for Peace and Prosperity

Posted on May 17th, 2008 in psychology by admin0

200px-mandala_gross.jpgOver the last few weeks, I have been watching the tremendously funny and very informative TV show clean House comes clean . Now for those of you who don’t knowabout Feng Shui, this show is tremendously informtive and understated. additionally, of course, the show does highlight the psychology behind all the cluttered messes that his team of jokester/experts encounters. One of the things that is not known about very much in the West is something called Muhurta or electional astrology. This is the most auspicious time for “electional” activities to begin. This is when the planets are aligned most auspiciously to give the best result in any major activity that you might be considering.

The next thing and probably the most important, is the actual plans of the house. the lements need to be located in certain directions of the hous (NSEW) for the maximum benefit and prosperity of the inhabitants.  You can find a lot of information on this topic at VaastuInternational.

However, Feng shui is much more popular in the west and has a considerable following. There are many principles that one should consider, for example, in creating a quiet and peaceful home life. How the house is oriented north-south-east-west, as well as how the five elements, earth, water, fire, air and ether(space).
If you are constructing a new house, you may have some choices about this. Of course, there are obvious things, like public access and how the rest of the neighborhood is oriented. Let’s say the house is already built and you are trying to resolve some family irregularities. Let’s look at a simple example of marital irritability. The first thing a Feng shui expert may look at is the orientation of your marital bed. Does the entrance path to the bedroom dissect the bed? Is there clutter in the room? Very often, Feng shui experts recommend that the marital bedroom be a place of tranquility. And that means no computers, no TV’s. Obviously, people get married in order to spend time with each other and to procreate. So having electronic devices in the bedroom is not conducive to that marital bliss.
Okay, now lets look at the rest of the house. In the case of the TV series I mentioned,
they pretty much deal with people who are collector addicts or otherwise obsessed with their belongings. They try to convince these people to let go of their obsessions and then they have a yard sale. At that point, they seem to be able to come up with sufficient funds to restructure the living space to deal with the psychological difficulties the family is facing.
Colors, of course, are going to be very important in the resolution of family problems. These colors for the bedroom, in the case of marital problems, need to be selected carefully, as this will again effect the spiritual togetherness of the couple.
Sometimes a Feng shui consultant will detect that there are inherent structural problems in the house immediately. For example, if the front door opens to an opposite exiting door, there will be difficulties maintaining friends. Possibly, the door will need to be blocked and something more inviting replaces the door. Sometimes, the front door opens onto a large mirror. Again, not too inviting to stay very long. Smaller pictures and mirrors that reflect the light might be chosen for warmth.
Many times, people clutter their existence with memoirs and are unable to let go of them.
This, in itself, may be causing some destructive patterns in the relationship.
If there are already inherent structural imbalances in the house, the Feng shui expert may recommend re-orienting the furniture, or even discarding furniture that may be more of sentimental value than actual real value for the inhabitants.
Sometimes a Feng shui expert will recommend some elements to be added to the environment, such as living plants, like bonsai plants. The Vaastu shastra expert may recommend certain yantras be placed in the living space. These are picture mantras that may reverse the inherent difficulties of the space.
According to one should also sleep with one’s head facing south for quiet sleep.

Classically, astrology only plays into this at the beginning of the construction of the house or building. then an astrologer who is trained in Muhurta can select an auspicious time to start the construction.

Orthomelocular Medicine: Diet Cure for Schizophrenia

Posted on March 26th, 2008 in nutrition by admin0

ahoffer.jpgIn the NY Yimes today is a story about a  schizophrenic patient, William Bigley in Alaska who does not want to take his medication, Zyprexa. Now in Alaska, the court does not force the patient to take his/her medication. Additionally, it has been discovered that the pharmaceutical industry, Lilly, which manufactures this drug, has kept its side effects secretive: it actually causes weight gain and diabetes. Now. many in the Alternative Health field many researchers believe that diet actually is the major cause of schizophrenia. According to Mental Help, indigenous cultures do not display this disease amongst their population. However, when they assume a Western diet, the population studies show an increase in therates of schizophrenia. It has been suggested that wheat and dairy products are the mainculprit in causing an allergic response. so possibly a vegan, gluten  free diet is the answer. Noted author, Abram Hoffer, MD,PhD, a psychiatrist with a PhD in biochemistry, wrote much about  orthomolecular medicine. In fact, on one occasion, he joined with Nobel prize winner, Linus Pauling, in citing that there are certain Vitamin deficiencies that may be responsible: Vitamin C, B-6, B-3, B-12, tryptophan, niacin are amongst the list. Additionally omega 3 fatty acid oils, and as I have mentioned many times, this is available in walnuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, flaxseeds, and avocados. Also mineral deficiency has been cited as well, namely, zinc, copper, manganese. Gingko biloba, which has a special extract called EGb 761, is also being used. by the way, Dr. Hoffer is 100 yrs old.

Skin Care & Nutrition

Posted on March 22nd, 2008 in nutrition by admin0

hornofplenty1.jpg    I just received another nice video tutorial from Dr.Vince Bellonzi discussing skin care. He makes the case that rather than spending a lot of money on expensive cream and other external treatments, it is better to concentrate on your nutrition. One of the major culprits is sugar, which changes your internal structure. You need nutrients that will give you collagen, omega 3 fatty acids (flax seeds, walnuts, avocados, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds. Additionally, some medications may have adverse effects on your skin. Too much sugar can also cause blemishes. Vitamin B’s are also very important. Hydration is another important factor, and if you drink coffee and tea, you will have to drink even more. Selenium has also been cited in protecting against sun damage, and it can be obtained from Brazil nuts and whole grains. Zinc is another important factor and can be found in peanuts, peanut butter, legumes and lentils. obviously, you will want to avoid alcohol and smoking. Olive, almond and coconut oil are extremely helpful in maintaining healthy skin. I usually add some coconut milk to my smoothies, which usually consists of some kind of leafy green vegetable, bananas and coconut milk. Flavanoids are extremely important because of their role as anti-oxidants. They can be found in Citrus fruits, like lemons, limes and grapefruits. Also, as is common knowledge, the peels of vegetables and fruits contain valuable nutrients. Hope this helps.

Anti-Depressants: the Emperor’s New Clothing?

Posted on March 5th, 2008 in research by admin0

caduceus.jpg According to a recent study released on Feb. 26, 2008,in PLOS Medicine antidepressants have been found to have very little efficacy compared to a placebo. In the attached video Dr. John Breeding compares anti-depressants to the “Emperor’s clothing.” The multi-national study’s findings were submitted to the FDA. The findings indicate that”the new-generation antidepressants do not produce clinically significant improvements in depression in patients who initially have moderate or even very severe depression, but show significant effects only in the most severely depressed patients.” As the FDA has very high standards for its clinical studies, these findings are definitely noteworthy. Many health practitioners are taking a second look at these findings and certainly the Public is concerned that this might have been a major pharmocolgical scam.

Is ADHD a Biological Imbalance?

Posted on March 2nd, 2008 in childhood disorders by admin0

brotherra.jpg                           My friends from Genofis on youtube sent me an interview from Brother R.A. of Real Black Talk.com who recently interviewed Dr. Fred BaughmanJr, a neurologist & graduate from New York School of Medicine (1960_. Dr. Baughman says that ADD and ADHD are not real diseases and have been “invented” by the psychopharmocological industry. He says that there never has been any proof that there is any real “chemical imbalance” of the brain. He claims that the U.S. school teachers have been indoctrinated by the U.S Dept. of Education to believe this hoax and are actually the ones who are pushing these “diagnoses.” They, in fact, “coerce” the parents, and there are cases where the Dept of children and Families have removed children from the home because of lack of co-operation from the parents. One of the major drug companies promoting these drugs is Novartis. At a conference on the Concensus of ADHD, Dr. Baughman, questioned Dr. Swanson’s MRI findings that the so-called ADHD child’s brain is 10% smaller. Dr. Baughman suggests that it is actually the drugs(like Ritalin) that are causing this atrophy, because the children tested are, in fact, on these drugs. He also mentioned that there are considerably adverse side effects as well, even heart attacks. Apparently even 3-5 yr. old children are now being targeted. In 2003, Dr. William Kerry testified before congress that 17% of 53 million schoolchildren seeing a psychiatrist would receive a prescription for a neuroleptic drug. Now there is the President’s (GWB) New Freedom Commission on Mental Health that is pushing “teen screen”, and says that in Nashville, apparently 51% tested positive for “clinical depression” and will be referred for psychiatric drugs. You can read more about this on his adhdfraud.org In another interview on PBS Dr Baughman says that the U.N. expressed concerns over the Ciba-Geigy, the manufacturer of methylphenidate (Ritalin) having financial ties with a leading proponent of ADHD treatment, CHADD.org However, to be perfectly correct it is imperative to examine Dr. Baughman’s ties with the Church of Scientology and his participation with their Citizens Commission on Human Rights, a highly dubious organization as well. Other physicians, like Dr Scott Saunders have claimed that simply changing a child’s diet and exercise routine does make a major change in the child’s behavior. Do your research.

Exercise Helps Dealing With “Toxic People”

Posted on February 7th, 2008 in exercise by admin0

2lillian_glass1.jpg                 Haven’t we all experienced these kinds of people in our life? These are the types of people who may be genetically, or possibly insecure about themselves and use various types of “toxic” methods to put other people down. What is the psychology of this mechanism? Freud had something to say about that and there are many theories. What is more important is how to deal with such people you may find in your life.Danielle Barone states that 1st step is to identify the toxic people in your life. She says that you will have a feeling that you are “going crazy” and that you are the one who must eliminate that person from your life and, until you that, you will be allowing that person to control you. She has some other advice about dealing with these toxic people and they are 1. exercise to release endorphins and 2. develop a support group. Even Oprah’s guest life coach, Cheryl Richardson talks about this issue and divides these negative people into different types: 1. the Blamer;2. the Drainer;3. the Shamer;4. the Discounter;5. the Gossip. The main thing is to develop a mechanism to keep them from making you sick. The picture above is Dr. Lilian Glass, author of “Toxic People.”

Autism Ameliorated by Exercise: Case of J-Mac

Posted on February 6th, 2008 in childhood disorders by admin0

280px-jmac_president_bush.jpg              This started out as a post on my astrology site, but because it also has some implications in the field of alternative therapy for autism, I decided to post it here as well. J-Mac, 1s a 20 yr old man who was diagnosed as autistic, became a national celebrity in February of 2006. Because of his shortness and “lack of skill”, he was pretty much on the bench during the basketball season. However, on that day, at the very end of the game, with 4 minutes left, he scored 20 points. Well, he, of course, went on to become a national celebrity, and met President George, w. Bush, appeared on CBs and Oprah, and many others. At the present time, he is under contract to make a movie of this famous game. His real name is Jason McElwain. He has a modified Kalaparusha Yoga giving him that quick rise to fame. What is the reason for his autism? If we look at his natal chart we do find Ketu conjunct with the sun and they are sworn enemies. In his 12th divisional chart,Saturn is in its’ enemy’s house (Cancer) and it is directly aspecting Mercury. Quite often this can lead to neurological problems. Jason was receiving speech Therapy. He does have Mars in his ascendant and is currently in a Mars period, so this again may account for his quick ascendancy. I might also note that, as I have noted before in previous posts, that oftentimes those with Asperger’s Syndrome (Autism) do go on to have productive lives. It is what is known as a “spectrum disorder” with many degrees of affliction. He is a true inspiration to many who have this “disorder,”and, as other authorities, like Dr.Scott Saunders have said, exercise does truly have a beneficial aid for these children.

Dietary Remedies for “Hot Flashes”

Posted on February 2nd, 2008 in nutrition by admin0

flaxseed-nan.jpgAccording to MSN Health Dr.Sandhya Pruthi MD of the Mayo clinic has found in a clinical study that lignans found in flaxseeds may reduce the incidence of “hot flashes.” In addition to flaxseeds, Other sources of lignans include cereals (rye, wheat, oat, barley), pumpkin seeds, soybeans, broccoli, beans, and some berries Wikipedia. As I mentioned in a previous article, flaxseed is also a source omega3 fatty acid oils. Additionally, according to power-surge soy isoflavones are extremely critical, as well as 1250 mg of calcium/day. Soy products, like tofu and tempeh, are preferred over soy “pills.” They also recommend Evening Primrose oil to reduce these symptoms. Also, Tracy Cornforth states that there are dietary triggers for “hot flashes, like, caffeine, alcohol and cayenne. Moreover, over-heating exacerbates the symptoms. So, she recommends cotton clothing. Finally, all the experts recommend exercise and meditation.

Silent Inflammation

Posted on January 27th, 2008 in nutrition by admin0

chamomile_small.jpg              K. Steven Whiting Ph.D., Director of the Institute of Nutritional Science points out that one of the main causes of “silent” inflammation is the use of vegetable oils in the diet. Now, although this seems counter-intuitive, he explains that these oils are poly-unsaturated and, when exposed to air, become rancid quickly. So, when used, they produce prostaglandins in the body which again stimulate “silent” inflammation. If you already have an inflammatory condition, such as bursitis or arthritis, this may actually increase the inflammatory process. At the Institute they have developed a formula which is high in ]anti-oxidants and omega 3 fatty acid oils. According to new patent inventors, Mahabaleshwar Hedge, Ulhas Wagh, Shahida Khan omega 3 fatty acid oils and anti-oxidants are “endangered” nutrients due to shifts in the usage of omega 6 fatty acid oils which increase the shelf life of products and fatten livestock. The inventors are promoting an organic honey and omega 3 fatty acid oil combination. Apparently, this increases the shelf life of omega 3 fatty acid oil to 6 months.

Alternative Therapies for Alzheimer’s

Posted on January 23rd, 2008 in exercise, nutrition by admin0

avocado.jpg         In a recent study in Brooklyn, Wall St. Journal Blog reported that by adding the component of human touch in the therapeutic regime of Alzheimer’s the Nursing Home at cobble Hill were able to reduce the reliance on anti-psychotic drugs for these patients. However, as Lisa Sneddon, of Senior Living wrote, according to Federal guidelines, it is more difficult for Nursing Homes to be reimbursed for hiring additonal staff, whereas they are reimbursed for the pills. In a previous article, My Name is Lisa I mentioned that researchers have found that omega 3 fatty acid oil can also be helpful in treating Alzheimer’s, reported Ben Kage of News Target. Omega 3 fatty acid oils, although commonly associated with fish, can be found abundantly in walnuts, avocados, flaxseeds, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds. Since fish can often contain high levels of toxic Mercury, it would seem that this natural source of the omega 3 fatty acid oil is preferred. In the video is the “blindguru” making an avocado pit smoothie. Advice: don’t do this with an ordinary blender.

Curing ADHD with Diet & Exercise

Posted on January 22nd, 2008 in exercise, nutrition by admin0

wynforddore.jpgAfter I wrote a brief article the other day about nutrition and ADHD, I stopped by Dr. Scott Saunders site and opted to receive some information about his methods of curing ADHD naturally. Today’s email spoke about the great benefits of exercise, even brief 45 minute exercise programs. he says that these will increase circulation to the brain and increase production of sensitive neurotransmitters that are often at low levels in these children. Similarly,Peter Schworn, Boston Globe also reported that there was a scientific study, called the Dore study in England that was created by Wynford Dore who was “looking to find a cure for his daughter’s dyslexia.” So with some success in England, it has now expanded to the U.S and there are now 5 centers in the States, including one in Needham in the suburbs of Boston. The Dore center is tuition-based and is geared towards helping children with ADHD, dyslexia and other neurological disabilities. So far, they’ve had some remarkable results. However, the “mainstream” medical community has not yet endorsed it. To me, it would seem like the Dore Center has some very good advice. The Dore Program was started to help dyslexia, but is being used also to help others with ADHD and dyspraxia according to Wynford Dore’s Blog. As you can see from the video, the Dore Center is quite different from what Dr. Saunders has suggested, and, truthfully, although there are some valid points in the Dore program, I would tend to KISS (keep it simple silly), and just have some good old-fashioned fun outdoors, and save the $4,500 tuition.

ADHD & Behavioral Modification

Posted on January 21st, 2008 in childhood disorders by admin0

freud.jpg         As I mentioned in another post Dr. Scott Saunders has provided some valuable information about treating ADHD naturally. Today he suggested using behavioral modification, or “token economy” to produce changes in behavior naturally. He believes this is possible if the system is used consistently. Another gentleman, a psychologist Lawrence Weathers, Ph.D. is also of the same conviction, and believes that ADHD is a learned defense mechanism produced because of early trauma with which the child is unable to cope. He cites Sigmund Freud’s work in psychopathology as an explanation for the commonly observed “hyperactivity” of these children. On the other hand, Freud himself was a cocaine addict Wikipedia and, I believe, left this legacy of reliance on medication in psychiatry. Dr. Weathers was diagnosed with ADHD as a child himself, so he has first hand knowledge. Now he uses a program called Computer Aided Emotional Restructuring (CAER) in which the child, parent and teacher all participate. It is his contention that these children actually think in the same way as everyone else, but there may be an emphasis on certain patterns. He believes that most of the children with this “disorder” display a kind of avoidance to stress what he calls “the Conditioned Attentional Avoidance Loop. On the other hand, Dr. Wayne C. Jones, of Richardson TX, a board certified neurologist cites the MTA study of 1999 sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health which found that if a child is on the right medication and on the correct dosage, the child actually benefits, because they are able to live more normal lives and grow in their self-esteem. I have a grandson who was diagnosed with ADHD, and he’s a vegetarian, gets plenty of outdoor exercise, “token economy” and medication. He’s also an honor student, so maybe the truth is in using all these techniques appropriately, not just relying on pills to cure the problem.

ADHD & Diet

Posted on January 20th, 2008 in nutrition, childhood disorders by admin0

brain-human-marker-bg1.jpg                       This afternoon, I listened to a lecture given by Dr. Michael Lyons, director of Functional Medicine. He is both a traditional, as well as an allopathic doctor. One of his primary interests is ADHD and the video I listened to is called “Is the Child’s Brain Starving?” It’s quite a long video, 79 minutes, so I’ll summarize a few points. First he points out that the brain requires a great deal of calories and , and minerals to function properly generate neuro-transmitters. In children with suspected ADHD disorder, their brains appear to be suffering from inadequate nutrition, as well as neurotoxins from pesticides contaminating the food supply. The reasons for this “starvation” may be due to the wrong type of diet, “leaky gut” (the child’s intestine is not absorbing nutrients) secondly Dr. Lyon’s group found that ADHD children had a higher percentage of intestinal parasites, and lastly, the child may be suffering from some type of food allergy. As far as the diet is concerned, the American Junk food, high sugar diet are the most likely culprits. The video I have attached here is a short interview by Arnold, who owns a Raw food store with one of his customers. Dr. Lyons describes the lateral prefrontal cortex as being the executive center of the brain and this has also been corroborated by Hajime Mushiake of Tohoku University School of Medicine. If this portion of the brain is underfed, then the child may act chaotically. Additionally, Dr.Kiki Chang, of Stanford Univ., an advocate of preventative bipolar medication, cites the amygdala as being the area of the brain that is underdeveloped in so-called bipolar children. There’s even a new group, BrainMatters, Inc. that will do an MRI and advise you if your child is bipolar or has ADHD. Even if that is the case, I might ask, what is the treatment? Dr Lyons and Arnold seem to feel that the cure is in the diet. Remember, with any of these medications, there are significant side-effects. I have also posted Dr. Lyons lecture (remember it’s 79 minutes.) I also wanted to mention another authority

ADHD: Over-Diagnosed?

Posted on January 14th, 2008 in childhood disorders by admin0

brain-human-marker-bg.jpg       Natalie Sachs-Ericsson, author and FSU psychology professor states that verbal abuse, as well as physical and sexual abuse can mimic the symptoms of AHDH in a study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders dated 6/2006. she and the co-author, Thomas Joiner found that adults who had been subjected to verbal abuse were more likely to display symptoms of panic disorder, anxiety and depression. as early as 1999, Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical school, Dr. Martin Teicher was questioning the use of Ritalin and Adderall to treat ADHD according to an article dated 3/1999 in the Harvard Gazette. He says: “If a child behaves like we expect someone with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to behave, we label the child with that disorder, then treat him or her with medication,” notes Teicher. “That’s not the ideal way to make a diagnosis. It fails to distinguish between children who have a diminished capacity to sit still and those who have the ability but fail to use it.” Teicher also points out that Symptoms of stress, anxiety, or depression may produce behavioral disturbances resembling ADHD. Many alternatives to prescription medicine exist. However, there is a strong bias in the community, especially amongst teachers to use the prescription drugs. I believe this has more to do with the over-crowded conditions of the school and the inability of the teachers to manage an unruly child in the classroom. it is simply easier to medicate the child. There are also those in the Field of complementary Medicine who feel that there are natural remedies available for the “hyperactive” child, like combinations of St.John’s wort, Lemon Balm, Passion flower, Bacopa, 5 HTP (Griffonia Simplicifolia and possibly some other co-factors, like Zinc, and Magnesium. However, I have also noticed that some who are diagnosed with ADHD are in fact bipolar and are later diagnosed with that at a later time. However, in 2000, Dr Joseph Biederman. MGH shocked the psychiatric world by claiming that some children , even as toddlers are actually bi-polar and argued to medicate them as such. so, if you think your child has this disorder, make sure you consult an expert, and also take the time to evaluate your own parenting style. Dr. Sachs-Ericsson and Dr Joiner point out that verbal abuse by a mother is more damaging than screaming by a father. This may lead to adult depression and anxiety. I have added an extremely informative video by Dr. John Breeding author of The wildest colts Make the Best Horses. He is speaking here in the video of the PBS documentary The Medicated Child, which I recommend that you watch if you didn’t catch it January 8, 2008. A few yrs ago, Bill Clinton mandated that the pharmaceutical industry had to do child-oriented research and offered an incentive. The results of that research indicated that adult prescriptions are not effective for children. Big profits for the drug industry?

Fats Okay for a diet?

Posted on January 12th, 2008 in Uncategorized by admin0

hornofplenty.jpg             I read an interesting article on Prevention.Com (MSN) today that cited a study published in Diabetes Care magazine by scientists at Reina Sofía University Hospital in Córdoba, Spain, concluding that a certain amount of fats include in the diet will actually help you lose weight, especially around the abdomen. However, they should be monounsaturated fats, which are derived basically from plants, such as avocadoes, olives and nuts. This is a well known fact already among raw food advocates. like David “Avocado” Wolfe. One of his videos is in the player. This same result was also found by the scientists at Harvard University in a study published in 2001. I have another friend, Phil McCluskey who lost about 120 lbs with raw smoothies and avocados. Another important point is that avocados, walnuts, flaxseeds, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds contain the valuable omega 3 fatty acid oils which have been shown to be important in the Prevention of Alzheimer’s. I have some wonderful vegetarian recipes posted on Veggie Bliss.us.

New Innovation for Children

Posted on January 3rd, 2008 in psychology by admin0

dubai.jpg                Just about a week ago, I was chatting with a friend of mine on the West Coast and he told me he was doing a “sketch” for an ashram in Santa Cruz. I was a little surprised, because my friend Sasa Raphael is otherwise known has a hip hop artist and webmaster. So I asked him if he was using Auto-Cad, which is the program that my son-in-law uses for his architectural renditions. He said, no; this was Sketchup.Google.com. So I downloaded a copy and checked it out. Maybe it’s not as sophisticated and as rigorous as what is needed for licensed architects, but it’s pretty far out and jammed pack with geometry and rotation devices and textures and just about anything you might need for a preliminary drawing. Now it’s not on the standard of Kobi Karp, Architect, but it’s challenging. So, I decided to take a run on it with my 5 yr. old granddaughter. And we had a blast! And, I’m pretty sure she’s learning her geometry. The picture is a Burj Al Arab, Dubai city’s 3rd-tallest building.

My Name is Lisa

Posted on December 23rd, 2007 in research by admin0

lisa21.pngI came across a very sensitive youtube film today. Actually it is the 3rd place winner of You Tube Project Direct and produced by Shelton Films. This short film documentary deals with the personal aspect of living with a parent who has Alzheimer’s. This dreaded disease is now epidemic and affects millions of lives. Not surprisingly, America has 25% of the victims. I have previously indicated that there is now research indicating that a diet rich in omega 3 fatty acids is necessary to prevent this disease. This can be found abundantly in walnuts, avocados, flax seeds, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds. Even though it is also found in fish oil, there are reasons why you should avoid that due to the Mercury levels found in fish. So a vegetarian diet would seem to be the best alternative.

Genius & Asperger’s syndrome

Posted on November 22nd, 2007 in psychology by admin0

albert_einstein.jpg Philosophy is really for everyman. However, there have been some truly remarkable sages throughout the ages. They have been visionaries, who , because of their genius, have foreseen the future. Aristotle and Plato recognized that there were cyclical occurrences in nature and thus talked about archetypes descending from the Absolute. In the same way, Carl Jung spoke about these archetypes.Quite often, geniuses have been observed to share some of the characteristics associated with Asperger’s syndrome: there is a delay in speech, there is a high memorization ability, there may be odd physcial obsessions or fixations. However, this great focus may be just what they need to produce the scientific explanations and mathematical formulations that are necessary to persuade the community of researchers to believe in their hypothesis.Such is the case with Albert Einstein and is characteristic of many present day scientists who have a keen desire to prove their theories. Einstein did not speak until he was about 4 years old. Quite often, autistic children go on to have normal lives with the help of proper early schooling and proper supportive parenting. Even Bill Gates is suspected of having this syndrome which is characterized by a lack of social skills and a fixation on ordering objects.
