Fish is Not the Only Source for Omega Fatty Acid Oils

I have written about this before, at other times, but noticed this ad Tuna Meltdown ad, and the total misrepresentation that fish is the only source of omega 3 fatty acid oils. the ad and link go on to berate parents who deprive their children of tuna-fish, because of fear of Mercury contamination.
What they don’t tell you is that fish are not the only source for omega 3 fatty acid oil, which is very important for sustaining cranial growth and activity, not only in children, but also in adults. In fact, the lack of nutritional omega fatty acid oils has been implicated in the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.
Now there are vegetarian sources for these omega 3 fatty acid oils: sunflower seeds, walnuts, flax seeds, pumpkin seeds and soy beans, according to PCRM.org.
While it may be true that not all fish are contaminated with Mercury, it is still not true that it is the only source for these nutrients. Plus, very often they don’t tell you what else is in the tuna fish, like dolphins.
Deficiency in these omega 3 and 6 fatty acid oils can not only lead to Alzheimer’s, but also to depression.

Moisturizers: A Problem? Or just for Mice?

According to Anna Boyd of eFlux Media, the recent scare about moisurizers may be a little exaggerated. You see, many people use moisturizers as if they were UV protection agents, or sunscreens.
They are not.
However, De. Allan Conney of Rutgers did find in his research that Dermabase, Dermavan, Eucerin and Vanicream – caused tumors to grow on the mice, according to Fox News. However, as other dermatologists noted, studies in mice don’t always produce valid results in humans.

Anti-Depressants: the Emperor’s New Clothing?

caduceus.jpg According to a recent study released on Feb. 26, 2008,in PLOS Medicine antidepressants have been found to have very little efficacy compared to a placebo. In the attached video Dr. John Breeding compares anti-depressants to the “Emperor’s clothing.” The multi-national study’s findings were submitted to the FDA. The findings indicate that”the new-generation antidepressants do not produce clinically significant improvements in depression in patients who initially have moderate or even very severe depression, but show significant effects only in the most severely depressed patients.” As the FDA has very high standards for its clinical studies, these findings are definitely noteworthy. Many health practitioners are taking a second look at these findings and certainly the Public is concerned that this might have been a major pharmocolgical scam.

My Name is Lisa

lisa21.pngI came across a very sensitive youtube film today. Actually it is the 3rd place winner of You Tube Project Direct and produced by Shelton Films. This short film documentary deals with the personal aspect of living with a parent who has Alzheimer’s. This dreaded disease is now epidemic and affects millions of lives. Not surprisingly, America has 25% of the victims. I have previously indicated that there is now research indicating that a diet rich in omega 3 fatty acids is necessary to prevent this disease. This can be found abundantly in walnuts, avocados, flax seeds, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds. Even though it is also found in fish oil, there are reasons why you should avoid that due to the Mercury levels found in fish. So a vegetarian diet would seem to be the best alternative.

Nutritional Research

Dr. Joel Fuhrman is quite a noted medical authority on nutritional research. In this Lifecrafting blog the author quotes Dr. Fuhrman as recommending a vegan diet and avoiding certain kinds of food that may be triggering headaches. Dr. Fuhrman even recommends getting off medications. He is well known for advocating vegetarianism as a cure for many illnesses.
